Home / Resources & Guidance / The Maples Care Home Resident Ambassador Shortlisted for Dementia Care Award!

It was on a sunny afternoon in late Spring 2023, as we prepared The Maples care home to open, that Samantha our CEO received a call from Stephanie, the wonderful granddaughter of Mike Adshed, looking for a respite stay for Mike who lives with dementia, so that the family could go on holiday knowing that their beloved Grandad was being well looked after. This was the first enquiry of many that we have received, and it remains special for all of us for so many reasons!

Mike did come to stay whilst the family were away and we noticed immediately how Mike’s engaging personality, his military background, and his love of the arts, created a safe and friendly space for people who lived in the home, to lean on and to help settle people in.

Mike went home after his respite but given his ability to truly help people feel ‘home’ and his ability to share his gift of drawing with other people we asked that Mike be named our Resident Ambassador. Mike has since come back most weeks to meet with people who have just moved in or to spend time helping people draw and be part of something special.

All of us at The Maples Care Home, are thrilled to announce that Mike has been shortlisted for an esteemed award in the Dementia Care Awards in the Inspirational Person Living with Dementia category! Mike has been recognised for his outstanding contributions in enhancing the lives of everyone at the home, especially people living with dementia.

The Dementia Care Awards, celebrate and acknowledge excellence in dementia care across the country. The Inspirational Person Living with Dementia category specifically recognises individuals who have made a significant impact in their community through their dedication and commitment to improving the lives of people with dementia.    11 e1715608576524

We are so proud of Mike and what he has achieved, and this demonstrates that people can and do live well with dementia. Steph, Mike’s Granddaughter said ‘It’s so lovely that Mike has been considered for this award.  He’s always been so helpful and considerate throughout his life, he’s not quite the same person now but he’s still very kind.’

From engaging in activities to providing companionship and support, Mike has gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia. His creativity, enthusiasm, and genuine care have made him a true inspiration to both the people who live and work at The Maples.

The winner of the Resident Ambassador award will be announced during the Dementia Care Awards ceremony.  We are eagerly looking forward to this event and keeping our fingers crossed!!
