Home / Resources & Guidance / Transforming Dementia Care: Majesticare’s Interactive Cars, Pets and Cuddles

Throughout September, in recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month, Care England is highlighting the exceptional work of its members in supporting individuals living with dementia in care homes across the UK. As a leading voice in the care sector, Care England is committed to sharing best practices and innovations that improve the wellbeing of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

This week, we take a look at creative objects and activities that have been introduced to bring positive experiences to residents with dementia at Majesticare Care Homes.

The HUG, a weighted, soft companion with a beating heart and an MP3 player, has provided comfort and reduced feelings of loneliness or anxiety. Its calming effect makes it an ideal companion for those who are unwell or bedridden.

Interactive pets offer the sensation of real animals through their responses to touch and motion, which helps provide comfort and familiarity to pet-loving residents. The team have treated these as if real to ensure that the resident experiences reality of the pet and not the object.

Residents have also enjoyed an interactive car experience, allowing them to virtually practice driving skills and engage in local area tours. One resident was able to take her driving test and was awarded her driving license. She was delighted.
